Polo, t-shirt or sweatshirt: choosing a uniform top for your trade

Which top suits which job, what each costs to brand, and how to build a uniform that works from a summer site to a winter yard.

The top is where the logo goes, so it is the first decision in any uniform. Most firms end up with two or three garments that cover the year; here is how the common ones compare and who each suits.

The polo shirt

The default uniform top for a reason: a collar reads smart on a customer's doorstep, cotton pique breathes on a site, and the left chest takes an embroidered logo that will outlast the shirt. Choose a 100% cotton pique such as the Fruit of the Loom Premium Polo for everyday wear and a polyester pique such as the Regatta Recycle.me for staff who sweat. Suits trades, drivers, retail, hospitality front of house and anyone who meets customers.

The t-shirt

Cheapest to buy and cheapest to print, and the right answer where shirts get ruined: labourers, warehouses, kitchens, events crews and festivals. A heavyweight cotton tee prints beautifully on the chest and the back. It reads less formal than a polo, which is the trade-off. See the work t-shirts range.

The sweatshirt

The winter layer for indoor and yard work, and the smarter choice where a hood is not wanted: workshops, schools, warehouses. A crew-neck sweatshirt embroiders on the chest like a polo and goes under a hi-vis vest or a jacket without bulk. See work sweatshirts.

The hoodie

The garment staff actually wear home, which is why a hoodie logo gets seen more than any other. The AWDis College Hoodie and the Gildan Heavy Blend are the two most firms buy: heavy fleece, huge colour ranges, sizes to 5XL. Embroider the chest, print the back. See work hoodies.

What each costs to brand

Branding is priced per garment, not per order, and it is the same on any of these tops. A logo is a flat charge per garment; initials, names and numbers are priced per letter; there is no minimum order. The product page shows the logo at its real size on the garment and the price before you add it to the basket.

A uniform that covers the year

  • Summer site or warehouse: printed t-shirts, with a polo for anyone customer-facing.
  • Trade van: embroidered polos, a fleece or softshell for the mornings, a hi-vis vest in the door pocket.
  • Shop, cafe or showroom: embroidered polos, a sweatshirt or cardigan for winter.
  • Outdoor crew: polos under a padded jacket or a hi-vis bomber, with a beanie.

Whatever the mix, order it together: baskets over £100 get 10% off automatically, UK delivery is £6 and free over £300, and the staff-order tool takes a size per person so the whole crew goes in at once. Everything is embroidered or printed in-house in Lowestoft.
